Краткое описание

Kipps.

Orphaned at an early age, raised by his aunt and uncle, and apprenticed for seven years to a draper, Artie Kipps is stunned to discover upon reading a newspaper advertisement that he is the grandson of a wealthy gentleman and the inheritor of his fortune. Thrown dramatically into the upper classes, he struggles desperately to learn the etiquette and rules of polite society. But as he soon discovers, becoming a true gentleman is neither as easy nor as desirable as it at first appears. The result of seven years' work, H.G. Wells's perceptive 1905 social novel was his own favorite. His biographer David Smith called it "a masterpiece," and argued that with Kipps, The History of Mr Polly, and Tono-Bungay, Wells "is able to claim a permanent place in English fiction, close to Dickens, because of the extraordinary humanity of some of the characters, but also because of his ability to invoke a place, a class, a social scene." This 2010 edition breathes new life into one of the author's nearly forgotten early works, with an introduction by contemporary writer D.J. Taylor and a cover designed by two winners of Britain's Design & Art Direction student competition.
