Portraits of the Hazleton Public Schools: Hazleton, Pennsylvania, 1992–1994.

Using a cumbersome 8 x 10 view camera with a tripod, Judith Joy Ross somehow creates portraits of remarkable honesty that—except for the fashions worn by her subjects—could have been made at any time in the past century. Her most celebrated series was produced in the early 1990s, when Ross returned to her hometown of Hazleton in east-central Pennsylvania to portray children in elementary, middle, and high schools there. In these 67 large-format images Ross invites us to look closely at these children, to see something of ourselves, while revealing how they see themselves. "Just as one recognizes innocence only after losing it, so one understands vulnerability best after experiencing it. The photographs are a record of compassion, of shared suffering. We observe it in the sympathetic identification that brings Ross to her work, and in the children's tentative smiles, their brave impulse to trust her, to sense themselves in her."—Robert Adams
